Self Care

READ

Hey Everybody.

Today I am going to talk about something that I use for my self-care and that is reading. I know it sounds weird but reading has helped me get through some of the toughest times of my life. It has helped me to escape. It has helped to build my vocabulary. It has helped to improve my concentration and focus. I will highlight each of these benefits below.

Okay so the first thing that I mentioned reading has helped me with was escaping. Sometimes you just need to turn your brain off with what is currently going on around you. In my case, it has been during times of extreme stress in my life. I went through a terrible breakup in my early 20’s with the man I thought I was going to marry. I know it sounds cheesy but it was very traumatic to me and made me question everything around me. When I picked up a book, I could escape for a little while and just worry about what was happening in the book. I know I am not the only one that has been able to do this. It really helped me to relieve the stress. It eventually helped me to work through the situation as well. Each time I put my book back down I was in a much better mood.

I have been able to build my vocabulary substantially from reading. Whenever I am reading, and I don’t know a word I make sure to look it up so that I know what it means. I start to see these words for a while and then eventually I can use them.

I don’t know if many of you know this about me, but I have ADHD. I wasn’t diagnosed until around college time and I believe I can owe this to reading. Over time reading has really helped me to improve my concentration and focus. I have always been into reading from a young age and I know it helped me to get through school without even knowing that I had it!

Reading has changed my life. I think it can help you too!

I have included a list of my favorite lists below that I will be updating frequently.
